b_thenewIf any of you have ever picked up a copy of Butt magazine (the “Fantastic Magazine for Homosexuals”), then I’m sure you’ve been as pleasantly surprised as I was the first time I looked through one. It is by far my favorite magazine, for one simple reason: it screams out gay in the most nonchalant way. What Butt does is portray regular people, every day people, just like you and me, that, by the way, happen to be gay. It takes a picture of them, then interviews them about everything from literature, porn, and jeans to Alaska, Female Genital Mutilation, and cumming.

It represents, in every way, what I like to call, the “New Homosexual”.

The new homosexual is a “by the way homosexual.” She is interesting and interested. The new homosexual is integrated within society, not secluded in gay friendly places. For the new homosexual, the world is gay friendly, and that’s where he is at his best. There’s no such thing as coming out, and, more importantly, there’s no such thing as being in the closet. No more “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it!” The new homosexual is not a statement. The new homosexual grew up to be gay, in the same way that some people grow up to be bad drivers. The new homosexual doesn’t make an issue of her sexuality. This is not to say that he is not “proud”, in the sense that the word has taken with the gay movement. He is as proud as any heterosexual. Stereotypes are not an issue, and fitting into them is not something that makes the new homosexual cringe. The new homosexual does not need to be identified as gay in order to validate her life. There is no justifying anything. No need to.

The new homosexual also couldn’t care less about ethical bullshit, religious stupidities, societal limitations. He is stronger than that, and understands that the best way to fight off these barriers is to ignore them. By not acknowledging their presence, they do not exist, and she can be who she wants to be.

It is a mindset that I think can catapult the gay movement into a world where life is fantastic for everybody, gay, straight, bi, questioning, or whatever. By all becoming new homosexuals, we can change things without doing anything. Just live our lives as if being gay is really not an issue, which, when we sit back and think about it, really isn’t.

Let’s all live our lives as fantastic homosexuals who don’t need to wear labels, who are activists simply by being who they are. This is not about hiding our sexuality. On the contrary, it is about being so open about our sexuality that it simply doesn’t matter anymore. It is about screaming out gay, in the most silent of ways.

Let’s all become new homosexuals, and life will be much much more than we ever dreamt it would be.
