Nan Goldin is an American photographer known for her documentary style photographs. Most of her work is a biography of the life of her friends and entourage which to her is her family, and an autobiography as well. She documents her own life and the life of her friends and “family” through photographs in a not quite traditional way. One of her books, The Other Side, is made up from photographs of transsexuals and transvestites taken as part of her fight for human rights. Nan Goldin’s photographs are intimate, and the theme is always secondary to her. Her purpose is to put things up in a mirror and make the world face it and be part of the whole image.
